# Who We Are

AIESEC in Denmark (AiD) is the Danish member entity of AIESEC, the world's largest youth-run organization. We are one of the seven original founding countries of AIESEC, established in 1948, and we have been developing young leaders and facilitating international exchange on Danish soil for over 75 years.

## Our identity

AIESEC in Denmark is a non-profit, non-partisan, student-run organization. Our members are university students and recent graduates across Denmark who volunteer their time to run exchange operations, recruit and develop members, build partnerships with Danish companies and institutions, and contribute to a global leadership development movement.

We operate under the global AIESEC brand and strategy while adapting to the Danish context — a small, highly internationalized country with strong universities, a culture of collaboration, and deep ties to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

## Founding and early history

Denmark was one of the seven countries that founded AIESEC in 1948, alongside France, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Belgium, and the Netherlands. In the years following World War II, Danish students joined their peers from across Europe in building an organization dedicated to cross-cultural exchange and mutual understanding.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, AIESEC in Denmark grew alongside the Danish university system. Local Committees (LCs) were established at major universities, and Denmark became a consistent contributor to AIESEC's global exchange network.

## National footprint

AIESEC in Denmark operates through Local Committees based at universities in major Danish cities. Each LC recruits its own members, runs exchange operations (both sending Danish students abroad and hosting international exchange participants), and delivers the AIESEC Experience locally.

The number of active LCs has varied over the years as new committees are chartered and others are consolidated. The current LC landscape is maintained on the [LC Map and Contacts](/aiesec-in-denmark/lc-map-and-contacts.md) page.

## What makes AIESEC in Denmark unique

* **Founding member status:** As one of the original seven countries, Denmark carries historical significance in the global network. This status gives AiD a voice in global governance and a strong alumni base.
* **Small but connected:** Denmark's small size means LCs can collaborate closely. The Member Committee (MC) has direct relationships with every LC President (LCP) and VP.
* **High internationalization:** Denmark's English proficiency and international outlook make it a strong destination for incoming exchange participants and an effective sender of outgoing volunteers and interns.
* **Sustainability focus:** Denmark's national commitment to the SDGs creates natural partnerships between AIESEC and Danish companies, municipalities, and universities.

## Our relationship with AIESEC International

AIESEC in Denmark reports to AIESEC International (AI) as a full member entity. This means:

* Denmark sends delegates to International Congress (IC) and International Presidents Meeting (IPM)
* The MC aligns national strategy with AI's global strategy
* Denmark's exchange data flows through Expa, AI's global platform
* Denmark follows the Global Compendium and participates in global governance processes
