# Welcome, Newbie!

> **Step 1 of 4** — Welcome to AIESEC in Denmark

## Welcome to AIESEC in Denmark

Congratulations on joining AIESEC in Denmark. You are now part of the world's largest youth-run organization, present in 127 countries, with a 75-year history of developing young leaders through cross-cultural exchange. This page is your starting point.

### What to expect

Your first weeks in AIESEC will be a mix of learning, meeting new people, and figuring out where you fit. That is completely normal. Nobody expects you to understand everything on day one. Here is a realistic picture of what the first months look like:

* **Weeks 1–2:** You will attend your first General Body Meeting (GBM), meet your team, get access to tools (Expa, Slack, Google Drive), and start learning about your functional area.
* **Weeks 3–4:** You will attend your first team meetings, begin working on tasks, and start understanding how your role connects to the bigger picture — sending students abroad or hosting international exchange participants.
* **Months 2–3:** You will take on more responsibility, contribute to a project or campaign, and start to see the impact of your work on real exchange participants and partners.

You do not need prior experience in business, marketing, or international relations. AIESEC teaches you everything through hands-on experience and structured education sessions.
{% endhint %}

### Your member journey path

Every AIESEC member follows a path from newcomer to experienced leader. There is no pressure to follow a specific timeline, but understanding the path helps you set personal goals.

| Stage                   | Typical timeline | What happens                                                                                  |
| ----------------------- | ---------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **New member** | Months 1–3 | Onboarding, tool setup, first tasks, first GBM, meeting your team |
| **Active member** | Months 3–6 | Regular contributions to your functional area, first project delivery, attending a conference |
| **Team Leader (TL)** | After 6+ months | You manage a small team, set goals, develop others, and take ownership of a workstream |
| **Vice-President (VP)** | After 1+ year | You lead an entire functional area in your LC, report to the LCP, and coach Team Leaders |
| **LCP or MC member** | After 1.5+ years | You lead your entire LC or join the national team to set strategy for all of Denmark |

Not everyone follows this path in a straight line, and that is fine. Some members focus on exchange participation (going abroad themselves), while others stay in leadership roles for multiple terms. The AIESEC Experience is designed to be valuable at every stage.

### Top 5 first-week tasks

These are the five things every new member should do in their first week:

1. **Get your Expa account set up.** Expa is AIESEC's global platform for managing exchanges and member data. Your Team Leader or VP will send you an invitation. Accept it and explore the dashboard.
2. **Join the communication channels.** Whether your LC uses Slack, Microsoft Teams, or WhatsApp, get added to the main channels. This is where announcements, questions, and social conversations happen.
3. **Attend your first GBM.** The General Body Meeting is where your entire LC comes together. It is the best way to meet people, understand the culture, and hear about upcoming events.
4. **Meet your Team Leader.** Schedule a short 1:1 (one-on-one meeting) with your TL. Ask them what the team is working on, what they expect from you in the first month, and how you can contribute.
5. **Read The AIESEC Way.** Understanding AIESEC's [vision, values, and leadership model](/general-knowledge/the-aiesec-way.md) gives you context for everything you will do. It takes 10 minutes and makes the rest of your experience much clearer.

### The buddy system

Many LCs in AIESEC in Denmark assign a **buddy** to every new member. Your buddy is an experienced member (usually from your functional area or a different team) who is your go-to person for questions, advice, and support during your first months.

**What your buddy does:**

* Answers your day-to-day questions about tools, meetings, and processes
* Introduces you to people in your LC and across the national network
* Checks in with you regularly to see how you are doing
* Helps you navigate your first tasks and deadlines

**What your buddy does not do:**

* Assign you work (that is your TL's job)
* Evaluate your performance
* Replace your TL or VP as your manager

{% hint style="info" %}
If your LC does not have a formal buddy system, ask your TL or VP to connect you with an experienced member who can play this role informally. Having someone to ask "silly" questions makes a big difference.
{% endhint %}

### What to do if you feel lost

It is normal to feel overwhelmed at first. AIESEC has its own language (check the [Dictionary](/general-knowledge/dictionary.md)), its own tools, and its own way of working. If you feel lost:

* **Ask your buddy or TL.** No question is too small.
* **Read this hub.** The [New Member Guide](/new-member-guide/welcome.md) and [General Knowledge](/general-knowledge/history.md) sections are designed for you.
* **Attend sessions.** The National Education Cycle (NEC) runs structured learning sessions throughout the term. These are built for new members.
* **Give it time.** Most members say they started feeling comfortable after about 3–4 weeks. Stick with it.
